By Sally Voth -- svoth@nvdaily.com

NEW MARKET -- Two passengers in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 this morning were airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, according to the Virginia State Police.

Passenger Valery Shindyapina, 53, of Harrisonburg, was ejected when the 2000 Toyota van he was riding in ran off the left side of the road into the median, struck an embankment and overturned at about 8:30 a.m., state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler said. He and another passenger, Mariya Dyuryagina, 20, of Spokane, Wash., were flown by Aircare to Charlottesville, Tyler said.

Driver Kristina Shindyapina, 22, of Harrisonburg, was cited for reckless driving, he said. It appeared fatigue was a factor, according to Tyler.
