College makes nation's top list

FRONT ROYAL -- A nonprofit educational foundation has ranked Christendom College with Princeton, the University of Chicago and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point among the nation's top 10 colleges.

The Intercollegiate Studies Institute praised Christendom for requiring students to follow "a rigorous core Catholic curriculum covering Western civilization before choosing a major in classical or early Christian studies."

"Instead of political correctness, there is an absolute expectation of Catholic orthodoxy; debates on campus are among Republicans, anticapitalist agrarians, libertarians, paleoconservatives and monarchists," the foundation says in its report, "Ranking America's Colleges."

In a written statement, Christendom's president, Timothy O'Donnell, welcomed the report as "a testament to the commendable work of our outstanding faculty, the excellence of our academic program, and the high caliber of our students."

The foundation's mission statement describes it as an educational organization that conducts programs dedicated to instilling among college students "an appreciation of our nation's founding principles -- limited government, individual liberty, the rule of law, a free market economy, personal responsibility and moral norms."
