Mother offering quilt at fair to help keep son's memory alive
By Sally Voth -- svoth@nvdaily.com
WOODSTOCK -- Fair week was the late Colton Thomas Lindamood's favorite time of year.
So, it's appropriate that his mother, Cathy Lindamood, is honoring her son's memory and raising money for a scholarship fund in his name by raffling off a quilt at the end of the Shenandoah County Fair.
Colton was 15 when he died in an ATV crash in May 2008.
The Colton T. Lindamood Memorial Fund gave away its first scholarship in 2009, his mother said. It is administered by the Shenandoah Community Foundation.
Currently, the annual scholarship is for $500, but Lindamood hopes to raise that to $1,000. It is awarded to a Central High School senior pursuing a career in agribusiness or automotive mechanics.
"His father [Thomas Lindamood] runs Lindamood Farm Supply," Lindamood said. "[Colton], of course, helped with animals since he was little. My father was an auto mechanic. [The scholarship] was kind of like a blend of both that."
This year's quilt, on John Deere fabric, has a green and yellow border, and has tractors and 40 place names embroidered on the squares.
"I call them townships or villages, from Quicksburg, Rinkerton, down to Strasburg, Oranda, Star Tannery," Lindamood said.
Last year's quilt raffle raised $1,200, she said.
This year's winner will be announced Sept. 3, the last day of the Shenandoah County Fair, following the livestock show and auction. Lindamood said Colton would've "loved the attention."
"He loved the fair," she said. "It was all about the fair. That was his favorite part of the year."
Recent postings on a memorial Facebook page mention Colton's passion for the fair.
"It's been three years, and those kids still think of him every day," Lindamood said.
Last year's quilt winner was Robert Lineweaver Jr.
"It's a beautiful quilt," he said.
Winning the piece, also on John Deere fabric, was a surprise, "especially since my daughter collects John Deere emblems and all that," Lineweaver said.
"She was tickled to death," he said. "And, it was well made. It's for a very good cause."
Tickets are $5 each, or five for $20. They are available every evening at the fair at the Lindamood Farm Supply booth in the show barn, at the Shell station in Edinburg, at M&R Mart in Woodstock, or by leaving Lindamood a message at 984-8171.
