FRONT ROYAL -- The Riverfest & Rodeo, presented by the town of Front Royal and the Shenandoah Riverkeeper, is scheduled this Saturday at the VFW Post 1860 grounds.
The Shenandoah Riverfest is a free daytime event open to the public. Activities will include canoe trips, wild animal displays, fly-fishing lessons, a river rescue demonstration, children's events, competitions and a raffle. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the VFW Post.
The Shenandoah River Rodeo is a ticketed event that begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.
Tickets are $40 for the first and $30 for each additional ticket. There are also sponsorship levels of $200, which includes four tickets, and $500, that includes six tickets and an option to enter the fishing competition. Children under 12 years old are admitted free of charge. Admission includes the barbecue, drinks (beer, soda and water), live bluegrass music and riverbank camping.
Guests also can reserve a seat in the fishing competition and join one of the guides. A $250 donation is requested for entrance into the competition.
All of the proceeds from the tickets support the Shenandoah Riverkeeper organization and river protection.
Raffle tickets are $5 for one and $10 for three. They are available at the Front Royal Visitor's Center and also will be sold at Riverfest and the Rodeo. Major prizes for the raffle include two kayaks, a canoe, fishing rod/reels, art and more.
Jeff Kelbe is the current Shenandoah Riverkeeper, whose job it is to patrol the water, educate the community and advocate for a healthier Shenandoah River. Kelbe monitors the river and researches fish health, pollution and green farming practices.
"This year, we are thrilled to be combining our Rodeo with the Riverfest," Kelbe said.
Both events will take place at the VFW Post at 1847 N. Royal Ave. in Front Royal.
