STEPHENS CITY -- A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 Monday afternoon left one Sherando High School student dead and another 17-year-old in the hospital.
The passenger in a 1998 Infiniti four-door, Middletown resident and Sherando High School student Donnai Laquail Diamond, 17, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, according to state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler. The driver, also 17, was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment, and has already been released. The driver's identity has not been released because she's a minor.
The driver of the second vehicle, Richard Green, 58, was not injured. Green, from Pennsylvania, was driving a 1996 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
Just before 4:10 p.m. Monday, the sedan, traveling in the left lane, was driving erratically down Interstate 81 southbound near Exit 307, according to witness reports collected by Myers. The car ran off the road to the left as it was passing the tractor-trailer. The Infiniti came back to the roadway and struck the tractor-trailer before veering off the road to the left again, hitting the median and overturning several times, according to police. The passenger was ejected and died at the scene, Tyler said.
Senior Trooper K.L. Myers issued the driver of the Infiniti a summons for reckless driving, Tyler said. Whether she will face any criminal charges is still under investigation.
State police were assisted by Frederick County Sheriff's Office and Middletown and Stephens City fire and rescue departments.
The crash blocked traffic for about five miles until the scene was cleared around 5:30 p.m.
