Wal-Mart bank heist suspect held in Maryland

FRONT ROYAL -- A man is awaiting extradition from Maryland on a robbery charge stemming from Friday's holdup of the Woodforest National Bank inside the Wal-Mart in Warren County.

The suspect, Damon Stanley Robinson, 38, of 2813 Lindin Way, Woodstock, Md., is being held in Howard County, Md., on an unrelated charge, according to a news release from the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators received information on Monday that led them to identity Robinson as the suspect in the robbery, according to Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron.

At about 12:30 p.m. Friday, surveillance cameras recorded Robinson passing a note demanding money to a female teller at the bank inside the store at Riverton Commons, off U.S. 340 and 522.

He then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to the release.
Warren County investigators coordinated with the Howard County Sheriff's Office after learning Robinson faced an unrelated charge there.

Robinson is being held on a charge of second-degree attempted murder stemming from a domestic incident, said Mark Verderaime, a spokesman for the Howard County agency.

Robinson is being held on a $150,000 bond, he said.

Robinson has been a fugitive since the March 25 incident, Verderaime said. He turned himself in to authorities on Monday.

McEathron was unaware of how long it will take to extradite Robinson.

"It will depend on whether or not he waives extradition," McEathron said. "It's usually done in a few days."

Media coverage of the robbery played an important role in the investigation and the eventual identification of the suspect, McEathron said.
