Woman charged after head-on collision

Daily staff report

TOMS BROOK -- A Woodstock woman received a summons for reckless driving after a head-on crash Saturday morning.

Around 9:25 a.m., a 2003 Mercury SUV driven by Patricia Ann Murden, 46, of Woodstock, was heading east on Mt. Olive Road when it crossed the center line and struck a 1994 Dodge Shadow, said Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler, a state police spokesman. Murden was transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, while the Dodge's driver, Jeffrey Allen Rosenberger, 50, of Edinburg, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital.

The crash occurred just west of U.S. 11. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, Tyler said.

Mt. Olive road is a straight stretch and people drive like they are on a race track: I avoid that road too. When I read this story; I couldn't help but wonder if the driver of the SUV was chatting away on a cell phone. I see this all the time even on 1-81. . . but when there is a wreck, the first thing reported is if they wore they seat belts or not. The seat belts don't cause these crashes, the inattentive, reckless drivers do. Still there is no big challenge to the cell phone: what in the world did people do before they had constant communication?

Yes, cell phone usage while driving is rampant but next time you are out driving around the county, keep track of how many law enforcement officers you see talking on cell phones while working and in county issued vehicles.

Yes, jjf I see those county employees and officers too: I just hope they are on "official" business. I even hear and see my mailman chatting away. Of course, sometimes I get another person's mail too. The others are usually just talking and laughing away; I hear them in stores, walking across parking lots - anywhere and everywhere! I hear them talking so loudly on their porch or yard; I wonder if they have cell phones or two tin cans and a string! :)
