STRASBURG -- The Strasburg Heritage Association is putting on a family reunion for the entire town.
A "share fair," featuring exhibits on local family histories, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church on West Washington Street. It will be the latest event in the town's 250th celebration.
"Local history is made up of family history," said Barbara Adamson, the association's president.
She encourages people to visit and bring items of their own that tells the story of their family. The event is free and includes refreshments and a tour of the historic cemetery on site.
Adamson also wants people to bring any materials they may have from the 200th celebration in 1961. The association has done its part by reprinting that year's "The Story of Strasburg," which is available for $8 at various locations. It will be on sale Sunday as well.
The 1961 book was published by First National Bank for The Northern Virginia Daily's bicentennial edition and written by Virginia Hinkins Cadden. It includes stories on Strasburg's founding, historic houses, the town's industrial history and how stolen railroad stock made its way to Strasburg.
The reprinted edition adds two historical pieces from Daniel Bly as well as an update on the town in the last 50 years penned by Adamson and Kathy Kehoe. In that piece, the writers note that in 1960, the town's population was 2,428, with the median family income in Shenandoah County $3,812.
In 2010, the population was 6,398, and the income $42,382.
Adamson said the response to the reprinted book has been favorable, and many of those who have purchased copies remember, and own, the original.
"It's been out of print," she said. "They've been unable to buy it for years."
Strasburg will have three more large events to close its 250th celebration after Sunday, beginning with an Oktoberfest on Oct. 1. Street banners that have been hanging this year will be available at auction then, Adamson said.
Also, monthly displays at the Arthur & Brown law office at 140 E. King St. will continue through the end of the year.
