FRONT ROYAL -- Impact Wrestling champion Kurt Angle's initial test showed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.091 percent when he was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence early Sunday morning, according to state police.

Angle, 42, of Coraopolis, Pa., was headed east on Interstate 66 following a performance at the Shenandoah County Fair in Woodstock.

The wrestler's first test, conducted at the scene of the traffic stop near Linden, came back above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

On a second test at the Front Royal police headquarters Sunday morning, Angle blew a 0.06, according to state police.

State police received a third-party call reporting a white Ford Taurus swerving "all over the road," said spokesman Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler.

Trooper C.R. Scally observed the vehicle "weaving and driving down the center line" while following it for about a half mile, according to the police report he filed. Scally pulled the vehicle over just east of the Va. 79 interchange at Exit 13.

"I made contact with the driver and detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage," Scally wrote in the police report. "I asked Mr. Angle, whom I identified by his Pa. drivers license, how much he had to drink and he replied he had three beers."

The report stated that Scally then asked Angle to exit the vehicle and perform a series of six sobriety tests.

Scally also wrote, "Mr. Angle's eyes were bloodshot and glassy."

During one of the tests Angle was asked to recite the alphabet beginning with the letter "D" and ending with the letter "P."

"Mr. Angle mixed several of the letters, repeated the letter 'P' and continued to 'W,'" says Scally's report.

When he was asked to count from 53 to 48, "Mr. Angle started with 50, then went back to 52 and ended at 38 missing and mixing up several numbers."

Angle agreed to take a preliminary breath test at the scene and according to the report had a blood alcohol level of 0.091. He was then placed under arrest at 2:06 a.m. and taken to the Front Royal police headquarters for the second test.

Angle was released from Warren County Jail on a $2,000 secured bond. His hearing is set for Oct. 4 in Warren County General District Court.

He is charged with driving while intoxicated as a first-time offender, which is a class 1 misdemeanor.

As one of the conditions of his bail, Angle was permitted to leave Virginia and return home until the hearing.
