Nonprofit's annual fish fry to auction off decorated outdoor chairs

WOODSTOCK -- Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River invites the public to take a seat against dirty waters.
This year's fish fry on Saturday, the nonprofit organization's seventh annual large fundraiser, will feature chairs decorated by local artists to be auctioned off. Organizers have seen similar auctions in recent years deliver an increase in money raised each time, and last year, the fish fry overall brought in around $20,000, said Diane Gould, who helped coordinate the artists.
"We've had one successful fish fry after another," said Ron Falyar, president of Friends of the North Fork. "[It] gets better as the years go by."
The fish fry is scheduled to last from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Woodstock Moose Lodge. There is a silent auction for river-themed pottery plates, music, food (chicken, along with fish) and a cash bar in addition to the chair auction. Tickets are $40, and can be purchased now or at the door.
There are 11 chairs decorated for the benefit -- either Adirondack or metal backyard ones. Gould said some of the Adirondack chairs are child size and several are painted on all sides. The chairs have been on display at King Street Art Works in Strasburg, PJ Designs in Woodstock and the Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center in Mt. Jackson.
No contributing artist had done work previously for Friends of the North Fork, which has auctioned floor cloths and benches in the past.
"There are so many wonderfully talented people in the valley," Gould said.
The fundraiser's popularity has grown as more people have learned about the organization and its efforts to clean the local river, Falyar said. Sponsorships for the fish fry are up this year compared to the 2010 event, he said, and tickets are selling "briskly."
Those are encouraging signs in this economy, Gould said.
"But the work has got to go on," she said. "The river is one of our valued assets."
