Seminar
Marquetta Mitchell, a financial adviser with Edward Jones, will host a Social Security seminar, "More Than Meets the Eye" Thursday at 6 p.m. at Cristina's Cafe, at 219 W. King St. in Strasburg. Refreshments will be served.

Guest speaker Matt Ward, divisional sales director with Protective Life Insurance Company, will discuss key facts about the Social Security program, including calculating benefits, choosing the right time to retire and at what age, receiving benefits while working, calculating provisional income and tax implications, and options for spouses and ex-spouses.

Education
Front Royal dentist Craig A. Zunka has returned from Schaumburg, Ill., where he taught at the 34th Annual National Dental Seminar in Homeopathy on Oct. 14-16.

The seminar is a composite of dentists teaching techniques using classic homeopathy principles in modern high-tech dental offices. It is an opportunity to teach current and past homeopathic philosophies as they adapted them to fit their practice with actual dental case experiences.

New location
Nibblins Edibles & Gifts plans to close its current location in Apple Blossom Mall on Oct. 30 when it relocates to Rutherford Crossing in November. The new store will be near Exit 317 off of I-81 in Winchester, by Target and Lowes.

The store plans to have a buy three get one free moving sale.

Awards
Dr. Megan Bureau, a physical therapist with Valley Health, was named the recipient of the 2011 Emergent Leader Award by the Virginia Physical Therapy Association. She was Virginia's candidate for one of the 15 awards given by the National Physical Therapy Association.

Bureau was one of six featured in the October issue of Shenandoah University's Physical Therapy Program, having served as president of the first graduating class to receive their clinical doctorate degrees from SU.

Among many accomplishments, she has developed the local Coaches Conference sponsored by Valley Health, has worked with PT students, taught at SU and received additional certifications to her degree.

Winchester-area resident Terry Metz was named the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 2011 Meritorious Logistician of the Year for his accomplishments as a primary supply specialist in the USACE Deployment Center.

Maj. Gen. Merdith "Bo" Temple, acting commanding general for USACE, presented Metz with the award at the USACE Summer Leaders' Conference last month in New Orleans.
Metz was recently named the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Middle East District's Employee of the Year.

The UDC, located at the Middle East District headquarters in Winchester, is a one-stop facility providing supplies and training to government personnel preparing for deployment to contingency operations.

DuPont Community Credit Union recently won three first place community service awards sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League. This is the second time that a Virginia credit union has won all three awards in the same year.

The credit union won first-place honors for the Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action, Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award and the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award. All three awards are sponsored by VACUL and Credit Union National Association.
