FRONT ROYAL -- State police have confirmed that a crash this morning on Interstate 66 involving two tractor-trailers left one of the drivers dead.

One of the vehicles caught fire, and smoke was visible from North Royal Avenue in Front Royal around noon. The crash closed I-66 westbound between U.S. 340-522 and Interstate 81.

The identity of the man who died is still unknown, according to Senior Trooper R.L. Fiorvanti. The other tractor-trailer was operated by a driver and co-driver, both from Georgia. Romeo Dulceany, 57, of Lawrenceville, Ga. was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash and appeared uninjured. The co-driver, Wayne Kelly, 52, whose hometown was unknown, was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Fiorvanti said that Dulceany's vehicle was rear-ended by the other tractor trailer in the right lane. It is unclear why the vehicle rear-ended him.

Dulceany said that he spun into the left lane and then off the road into the median strip. He estimated he was traveling about 45 mph.

Fiorvanti said the other vehicle was traveling around 70 mph. It is unclear whether the victim's cause of death was injuries from the crash or burns.

The crash occurred about a half mile west of the U.S. 340-522 interchange. Both vehicles overturned, with one in a ditch on its right side, the other on its side near the median strip.
