BOYCE -- Powhatan School has gone green.
The Virginia Association of Independent Schools named Powhatan a "Green School" in its Go Green Challenge, according to a press release issued Thursday. Head of School Sue Scarborough plans to present the award to the student body in the Niemann Auditorium at 2:20 p.m. today.
Powhatan's kindergarten through eighth grade placed first in the challenge's day school category for those with 200-500 students, the release states.
Winners were announced at the annual VAIS conference in Richmond on Monday, according to the release.
"These schools scored highest among all competitors in the challenge by implementing sustainable practices Oand policies throughout their campus," the release states. "Schools were rated on 26 different areas of sustainability in order to qualify to be named a 'Green School.'"
The challenge also looked at schools that incorporate sustainability concepts into their curriculums, according to the release. Powhatan has for more than a decade included these concepts in its Nature Enhance Approach to Learning Program, the release notes.
The school's McIntosh Center for the Arts and Sciences also employs "green" concepts by drawing heat and cooling from several geothermal wells on campus, according to Upper School Science Department Head Ray Legge.
