WINCHESTER -- A grand jury has indicted a city man for attempted murder and other charges related to a robbery and shooting incident in September.
Joshua Clay Coffelt, 20, of 625 Butler Ave., is being held on a $200,000 secured bond at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center.
Coffelt is charged with attempted first-degree murder and attempted robbery of Jesus Gomez, robbery of Alfonso Rivera, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, having a gun with drugs, and three other related firearm offenses.
The grand jury in Winchester Circuit Court indicted Coffelt on the charges. Judge John E. Wetsel Jr. ordered Coffelt, represented by Winchester attorney, Roger Inger, to appear in court Jan. 24.
Authorities accuse Coffelt of robbing Rivera of $201 at gunpoint during an incident in the 1600 block of South Braddock Street on the night of Sept. 23.
Court documents state Coffelt displayed a black handgun, fired one shot in the air and then another aimed in the direction of several bystanders. Coffelt fled the area. Police officers apprehended Coffelt farther south on the street.
A second person officers saw with Coffelt evaded capture, court papers indicate.
Officers discovered a Springfield Armory 9 mm handgun on the roof of a house near the scene of the incident, according to court documents.
Rescue workers responded and took Gomez to Winchester Medical Center for treatment.
Gomez was bleeding from his right eyebrow and was covered in blood, documents state.
A criminal complaint filed in the case noted that upon his arrest, an officer found a small, plastic bag containing crack cocaine and cash in Coffelt's shirt pocket.
