HARRISONBURG -- The Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation has entered into an agreement with Howard Shockey & Sons Inc. of Winchester to design and build a $14 million administration and maintenance facility.
The facility will be located on a 13-acre site owned by the city, at the intersection of East Washington and Vine streets. The property also houses the Department of Public Transportation facilities, a central garage and water storage for the city.
The $14 million project, expected to begin next summer, includes the demolition, design and construction of an administration and maintenance building, service bays, fueling station, wash bays and a storage area. Two abandoned open reservoirs on the site will be renovated for parking.
The project is being done under Virginia's Public-Private Education and Infrastructure Act, adopted by the Virginia General Assembly in 2002.
Harrisonburg received seven proposals for the job.
Jeff Boehm, Shockey's vice president said in a statement that this will be the company's 11th project using the PPEA procurement method.
The team led by Howard Shockey & Sons, includes RNL Design of McLean, Maintenance Design Group of Baltimore and Valley Engineering of Harrisonburg. Shockey, the general contractor, recently completed a similar project for Richmond-based GRTC Transit System. It was finished six weeks early and came in $1.8 million under budget.
