WINCHESTER -- A Berryville man remains free on bond after authorities say he tried to put $9,000 in fake money into a bank account last week.
Jackson Newbill Miller III, 26, of 482 Llewellyn Lane, stands charged with possession of 10 or more forged bank notes and one count of passing counterfeit bills. Frederick County Deputy T.A. Sandy arrested Miller on the charges Jan. 13.
Miller appeared in Frederick County General District Court on Tuesday via video from the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center. Judge David S. Whitacre granted his release on a $5,000 unsecured bond, according to court records. A jail official said Thursday that Miller left the facility Tuesday.
Miller entered the Wells Fargo bank branch at 121 Gateway Drive at approximately 11:50 a.m. Jan. 13 and attempted to deposit $9,000 in counterfeit cash, according to a criminal complaint filed by Sandy. The money was in $20 and $100 bills, the complaint states.
A bank employee checked the bills by pen and electronic means and found them to be counterfeit, according to the complaint.
"Accused was said to have reacted as soon as the bank teller marked the first bill but before advised him there was a problem," the complaint states. "The Accused told the teller he got the money at an art show. Later he advised the Branch Management he got it from a college friend that he had lent $7000 to while in college and since it had taken so long to pay back to give him $2000 more.
"Accused after arrest advised 'There's another thousand of the fake ass money in my car,'" the complaint states.
Whitacre scheduled a preliminary hearing on Miller's charges for March 27.
