Public Works: Leaf collection a success

By Kim Walter -- kwalter@nvdaily.com

FRONT ROYAL -- The town's Public Works Department seems to have made a good decision in changing they way it collects leaves.

About 6,000 bags of yard waste and 300 trees were collected from March through January, according to Jimmy Hannigan, acting director of the department.

In past years, department workers split the town into zones, and each zone had a specific week during which yard waste was collected, Hannigan said. Yard waste includes anything from grass clippings to leaves, he said. Instead of bagging leaves, residents were previously asked to rake leaves to the curb so that a vacuum could be used to collect them.

"We saw a couple different problems with that," Hannigan said of the former collection method.
Weather issues, including early snow showers, caused raked leaves to "spread all over the place," defeating the initial gathering that residents did, Hannigan said.

"I also understand that a lot of folks were getting home from work after their designated collection time," he said. "They might have time during the weekend, but by that time, they might've missed their chance."

This past year, residents were asked to bag their leaves and yard waste and place them at the curb by 7 a.m. each Wednesday so they could be collected.

"We had to remind a few people that things had changed," Hannigan said. While a couple of people complained about having to bag their leaves, complaints about yard waste collections in general decreased, he said.

"It just went a lot easier this year," he said.

Yard waste collection will resume March 14. However, leaves and yard waste can be taken to the Manassas Avenue Extended site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Wednesdays and Sundays. For more information, contact the Public Works Department at 635-7819.
