Traffic signals set at intersection

FRONT ROYAL -- New traffic signals began operating in Warren County this week, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

The signals are located at the intersection of Va. 658, Va. 627 and U.S. 340-522, the department said in a news release. The signals went into "flash mode" on Tuesday, and will begin regular operation at 9 a.m. Monday, the department said.

Way back in March of 2004 I attended my first Board of Supervisors meeting when the final realignment design of Rockland Road and Reliance Road was approved. I distinctly remember Supervisor Traczyk saying he was concerned there would be a traffic light every half mile on Route 340/522. And so it has come to pass. How many traffic lights now exist on 522 between the county line with Frederick and the border with Front Royal? Every light creates a rolling road block of slow moving tractor-trailer rigs struggling to get up to speed. The worst one is at the shopping centers southbound. I can't tell you how many times a string of big trucks prevent others from making it through the green light before it turns back to red. Same goes for the I66 left turn. YUK! Warren County has traffic jams. Thanks, Dick.

The number of traffic lights from Duck St. to Fairgrounds Rd. is ludicrous. The idea is to efficiently move traffic in a safe manner. Traffic lights are necessary to keep traffic moving safely but moving is the key word.
What group of bureaucratic decision makers are responsible for this genius plan?
Gas is too expensive to idle it away not to mention the increased exhaust emissions from traffic at a standstill.
    Where is the common sense?

Perhaps we can be charitable and chalk it up to duplicity instead of stupidity. It's a behavior-modification drill designed to get everyone to use 66 and 81 when they want to go from Front Royal to Stephens City or Winchester.
