Benefit for cancer patient set for Saturday

STRASBURG -- The community is once again coming together to support a young cancer patient and his family.

Liberty Tax is sponsoring a benefit for 7-year-old Trent Williams on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Crawford Insurance Agency parking lot.

Trent was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a brain cancer, in October 2010.
Saturday's benefit will include food, karaoke and a raffle of gifts from local businesses, Liberty Tax manager Brenda Beeler said. She said the company encourages its branches to be active in the community.

"In your hometown, you find something that's true and dear to everybody's heart," Beeler said. "When we were talking about what event we should pick, Trent was the first one who popped to our minds."

Businesses will set up information tables, pizza will be sold by Brothers Pizza and Castiglia's, and gift certificates to area businesses and hotels will be raffled off, she said.
"Any money we raise will go to Trent," Beeler said.

Fairfield Inn and Suites is giving away a night in one of its mountain-view suites, said general manager Rich Orndorff, who is also on the Town Council. Those rooms typically go for $109-$149, he said.

"I think it's a very worthy cause," Orndorff said. "Having children, cancer is a horrible, horrible disease. I've had it in my family. I've had very dear friends who have succumbed to cancer. It's horrible. But, it's even more horrible for someone who hasn't even begun their life to suffer through something as terrible as this, and I can't imagine what his mom and dad are going through, being a parent myself."

Strasburg rallies around those in need, Orndorff said.

"I'm a little biased, but I feel like people in Strasburg are unlike anyone else anywhere else that I've ever been," he said. "It's that community pride and it's that togetherness and caring that the community has that just makes me very, very proud to be part of the community."
