BASYE -- A fire at one of the the former Sky Chalet Mountain Lodges houses on Sunday caused about $8,000 in damages but no injuries, according to authorities.
The house is now part of the campus of Shenandoah Valley Teen Challenge, and was inhabited by a group of young men, according to Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue Chief Cletus Miller.
`
The blaze at 259 Sky Chalet Lane started at about 3 p.m.
Miller said the inhabitants of the house had just returned home when they discovered the fire and called 911.
Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. Miller said he believes the fire was caused by a previous fire in the fireplace.
"Basically it got down in the mortar joints between the hearth and the fireplace and set the floor joices on fire," he said.
There was significant damage to the floor and ceiling, but Miller said the home can be repaired.
Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue Department was assisted at the scene by the Mt. Jackson Rescue and Fire Department, Conicville Fire Department and a duty officer from Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue.

I'm sure the Chief didn't say "floor joices." He knows they are "floor joists." If the reporter doesn't know building construction terms, the Chief would have been glad to clarify, or, isn't that what editors are for?
