*Man charged after standoff with Winchester police

By Candace Sipos -- csipos@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER -- A city man is in custody after causing a more than three-hour standoff between himself and police early Saturday morning, according to Sgt. Frank Myrtle of the Winchester Police Department.

Darrin Heflin, 42, of the 600 block of Baker Lane, is being held at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center following charges of abduction and domestic assault, according to a city police news release.

During the standoff, Heflin's wife was able to safely escape from the residence.

Officers responded to the couple's home around midnight Saturday after receiving reports of a domestic incident, Myrtle said. They spoke with the wife and determined that a domestic assault had occurred, but Heflin was not home at the time. After receiving information that Heflin had arrived home, they responded back to the residence around 1 a.m. to serve the arrest warrant.

Heflin then forced his wife to stay in the home and police units were not able to make contact with either party. The man continued to refuse to exit the home after multiple attempts by police to contact him until roughly 4:15 a.m., when Heflin was arrested, Myrtle said.

"The Winchester SWAT team assisted the patrol units and used less lethal tactics to persuade Mr. Heflin out of the residence," according to the release.

There were no weapons involved and Heflin's wife sustained minor injuries, according to the release.
