FRONT ROYAL -- A neighbor rescued two apartment dwellers, Katherine and Jeffrey Laudermilk, from a fire at their residence at 24 E. Prospect St. Sunday night.
Members of the Warren County Fire and Rescue Service treated Jeffrey Laudermilk on the scene for smoke inhalation and transported him to Warren Memorial Hospital where he was later released, according to a news release from Chief Richard E. Mabie.
Katherine Laudermilk was uninjured, Mabie said.
Mabie said a smoke detector alerted the Laudermilks to the fire.
Mabie said fire trucks and rescue vehicles arrived at the scene at 7:48 p.m.to find smoke and fire pouring from windows of the Laudermilk residence on the second floor. The fire was brought under control by 8:11 p.m., Mabie said.
A department investigator concluded that the fire was caused by discarded smoking material in a bed, Mabie said.
Mabie said smoke, fire and heat damage was estimated at $35,000 and confined to the residence.
