STRASBURG -- A Wheeling, W.Va.-based newspaper company has an agreement to purchase The Northern Virginia Daily, staff members were told Friday morning.
The Ogden Newspapers Inc. has an agreement in principle to buy the nearly 80-year-old newspaper, and plans to close on the sale at the end of the month.
Ogden President and CEO Robert M. "Bob" Nutting told Daily employees that while Ogden owns 40 newspapers, it thinks of itself as a family, rather than a newspaper chain. His great-grandfather founded the company in 1890, he said.
"I have a lot of faith in the future of newspapers," Nutting said. "I have a lot of respect for the importance of newspapers in a community. I think it's going to be a fun company and a good company to work with."
He said he is also chairman and principal owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates and chairman of Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania.
