WINCHESTER -- A city man was arrested Tuesday after authorities said he had inappropriate conversations with an undercover police detective posing as a 13-year-old girl.

It is unclear what charges have been placed against David Wayne Valentine, of 1020 Hiatt Road, Winchester, who was already listed on the Virginia sex offender registry. According to the website, he is 56, unemployed and was initially registered in August 2000 on three sexual battery convictions in Frederick County from October 1999.

On Nov. 3 of last year, Stafford County Sheriff's Office detective C. Darryl Wells was asked to help Front Royal police with their investigation into Valentine, who lived in Front Royal at the time. He had been in communication with a detective, who originally posed as a 14-year-old girl from that area, according to the search warrant.

Valentine was then told that the girl he was communicating with had moved to the Fredericksburg area to live with her cousin, a 13-year-old female, the warrant states. He told the detective posing as the girl that he rented out his place in Front Royal and moved to Winchester with his brother, his brother's wife and their children.

He told the detective multiple times that communicating with her could cause him to go to jail but that he wanted to meet up with her, the document states. The two discussed plans of meeting in the Fredericksburg area twice. They talked about having lunch together, and Wells said people would think he was her father.

Wells told the detective that he likes to explore and that he wanted to get her "all revved up," explaining that he would start with kissing, the document states.

He told the detective that he loved her but was afraid he would go to prison if he met her, the document states, and said he wouldn't come without being positive that she was who she claimed to be. Wells told the detective that he wanted to give her a web cam to know she was real.

Wells is being held at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center. Authorities seized a cell phone and laptop from him and are analyzing the data.
