*SAAA staff take pay cuts to stave off financial crisis

By Joe Beck -- jbeck@nvdaily.com

FRONT ROYAL -- The Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging's struggle to survive deepened Tuesday with the disclosure of sharp pay cuts being taken by agency managers and rank-and-file staff.

Jonathan Price, director of operations, said at a board meeting that managers are taking a pay cut of between 10 percent and 20 percent and office staff will be reduced by 5 percent.

Part-time WellTran bus drivers also are taking 5 percent pay cuts.

Price said all the cuts are mandatory. John Hudson, chairman of the board of directors, said he hoped the cuts would prove temporary and pay would be restored to normal levels after the agency has weathered its latest cash flow crisis.

Hudson and Cindy Palmer, the agency's interim president, also issued pleas for an outpouring of public contributions. Palmer announced the initiation of a fund drive that will try to find 40 contributions of $1,000 each over 40 days.

I would like to know if the managers are in the centers,or in Front Royal? If the 5% is in the main office....what a shame! These are the people making the most money....center workers the least. This is not a viable solution.I still believe the top players in Front Royal need to go.Hire good, intelligient people for less.Less payroll, better management, peoples trust re-established.Why would we want the same people there? Please just let us know the salaries at this agency. If they are reasonable, more people would be more inclined to help.Just makes sense.Public info.PLEASE.If the Ceo/Pres,was making in excess of $100,000.00 (how was that allowed by the Board) what is the vice pres.making?I believe we have a right to the truth..Have not gotten that as yet.Help will come from the communities if they know the reason all this occured.

In the spirit of true conviction, the top forty employees should each donate $1,000.00 and THEN ask for a community match from forty benefactors.

I don't know about some of the folks who work for SAAA, but the little guys at the bottom, can't afford to take a pay cut. Some of these people are barely making ends meet as it is and SAAA is asking them to choose in some cases to decided between medication, food and keeping this job. That is not fair. Why should they have to pay for SOME PEOPLES' STUPIDITY? I realize that the Agency is trying to keep people employed, but the little guys are being asked to to give too much at this point, but then it is always the little guy that gives too much isn't???

I would love to ask someone for $1000 donation, but I am not sure how that Money would be used for the agency. I asked my cousin for a $1000 donation for the walk-a-thon before all the mess came out and I am almost sorry I did. If he has heard about the mess, he probably is. Since the Auditors have not made their report, how can anyone really be sure of where the money is going and how it is going to handled? When will the Auditor's report be released?.

Anna, I agree, however, that would take God's own miracle as I am sure you know.Did you ever see conviction at the agency, unless there was personal benefit? People I have spoken say no.Also say you were treated very badly by the former CEO,influenced by other less intelligent employees. If this is true,I am not surprised. But what goes around, comes around. And I believe the wheel is spinning. Thanks for caring about what is happening.

Linda:
I agree with you in that I am uneasy asking friends to consider increasing their donations to SAAA (or beginning to donate to the agency) when there has been no information released on how the donations will be used. If there were assurances that donations were going directly to get seniors off the waiting list for meals and services, I think the agency might get a better response.

I have spoken to friends/neigbors who actually have said they are waiting for the auditor's report to come out before deciding on whether to donate to the agency or not.

Personally,I do not want any donation I may choose to send to be used to pay attorney's fees when there are dozens of seniors on waiting lists for services. I know there is the program "Sponsor a Senior", but where are the reassurances that an agency that has been so horribly mismanaged will actually follow through and use the money for what it is designated?

The sooner the auditor's report comes out, and the sooner the criminal investigation is completed, the better.
