Funds to pay for repairs to town hall
$25,000 allocation approved for roof, audio equipment
STRASBURG -- Town Council approved the allocation of $25,000 toward much needed repairs to town hall at their Tuesday night meeting.
The funds, which come from the general fund contingency line of last year's budget, will go toward replacing the roof and some of the audio and technical equipment in council chambers.
According to Town Manager Judson Rex, the microphones and much of the other equipment in the chambers have not been updated since the building was constructed in 1991.
"We did add a digital recorder last year, but we found out that the digital recording is only as good as the microphones that go into it," he said.
He said the microphones are so outdated that the voices are not always picked up well, or at all, by the recorder.
Besides new microphones for the council members' seats, the allocated funds will also go toward a few tabletop microphones, a wireless microphone for members of the audience who wish to speak, and replacing some of the cabling.
The updated audio equipment will help Clerk of Council Amy Keller by making it easier to record the minutes for council meetings.
Rex said replacing the roof is necessary because multiple areas have consistent leaks, including his office.
That project will account for almost $14,000 of the funds.
There was some discussion at Tuesday's meeting as to whether now was the right time to embark on the upgrades.
"I'm all for better acoustics in this room," Councilman Bob Baker said. "But my question is -- is this the time to do it? Maybe [we should] do it when we are better off financially."
The request was approved unanimously, 7-0. Councilman Rick Redmon was absent Tuesday.
