FRONT ROYAL -- Six champion show goats were killed in a barn fire Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.
Warren County Fire Marshal Gerry Maiatico said the blaze, located at 75 Cattlet Mountain Road, was likely caused by a heat lamp.
He said they were using a number of farm-style heat lamps to warm some of the baby goats in the barn. One of the lamps was possible knocked over onto the bedding material, according to Maiatico.
The fire was fully involved by the time crews arrived around 12:30 p.m. and Maiatico said it took about 20 minutes to control the fire.
Several of the champion goats were able to escape, but six of them died in the fire.
Maiatico estimated the damages between $6,000 and $8,000, including the value of the livestock.

At the time I made the 911 call for this structure fire and several knocks on the back door of the residence to inform someone that there was a building on fire which was 50% destroyed, the owner came out and attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose which was useless by then. The gentleman had asked us (my family) if we had seen any goats out, that their were 2 baby's that he had in the building that were born 3 - 4 weeks ago ...... Hmmmmm now there is 6 champions, go figure!
Accidents don't just happen; they are caused. Once again animals must pay the price of careless humans. How horrible to burn up in a fire! Poor creatures, if only animals were not used for profit, food, entertainment etc. This unfortunate story reminds me of people who improperly use space heaters with tragic results or have unworkable smoke alarms. It doesn't have to happen: there are no shortcuts. Be safe and consider your choices.
