RICHMOND -- Del. Todd Gilbert's law-and-order stance has won him another accolade from the law-enforcement community.
On Friday, Gilbert, R-Woodstock, was to be given the Legislator of the Year Award from the Virginia State Police Association at the group's annual conference in Staunton, according to a news release from Gilbert's legislative assistant, Gary Frink.
The award was a result of Gilbert's "dedication and support of law enforcement in general and the men and women of the Virginia State Police in particular," the release quotes VSPA Executive Director Col. M. Wayne Huggins, who is a former state police superintendent, as saying.
"His tireless efforts towards ensuring the most professional State Police force possible is truly noteworthy," Huggins states in the release. "We the members of the VSPA have no better friend than Delegate Gilbert."
In a Friday afternoon phone interview, Gilbert said he was honored, and described the association as being very professional.
"I think I work very well with law-enforcement interests in Richmond, and obviously, my background is in public safety and I understand their issues better than most of my colleagues," he said.
Gilbert spent 14 years as a prosecutor before going into private practice. He is on the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission, the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action program, the House Courts of Justice Committee and the Criminal Law Sub-committee, and is the House's deputy majority leader, according to the release.
"Although I'm humbled and honored, I think it's men and women of law enforcement who deserve our daily recognition for their efforts to keep us safe," he said.
Last September, Gilbert was given the 2011 Outstanding Legislator Award by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. He was given the Champion of Justice Award by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys last summer.
