SU set to host National Geographic Bee state finals

WINCHESTER -- Shenandoh University will host the state finals for the 2012 National Geographic Bee later this month.
The statewide competition on March 30 brings 100 pupils in grades 4-8 to vie for a chance to represent Virginia at the national bee in late May at the organization's headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Thomas D. Powars, an eighth-grade pupil attending Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, and Katherine L. Viti, a seventh-grade pupil at Powhatan School in Boyce, qualified for the state tournament, according to a list of contestants provided by the Society.
State winners receive $100, "The Complete National Geographic" on DVD and an all-expense paid trip to the contest in Washington, D.C., held May 22-24. Alex Trebek, host of the TV game show "Jeopardy!," moderates the final round of the national bee, the winner of which receives a $25,000 college scholarship.
