No reasons given for absence of leader at Ressie Jeffries
Daily Staff Report
FRONT ROYAL -- Ressie Jeffries Elementary School principal Antoinette Funk is currently on leave from her job, Superintendent Pamela M. McInnis has disclosed in a letter to parents of students.
The letter, which was sent home with students Monday, offered no explanation for the leave or when Funk may return. In the meantime, Michael McCormick, the school's assistant principal, has taken the job of acting principal, McInnis said.
In a brief interview Tuesday, McInnis refused to comment on the reasons for Funk's leave, citing regulations governing personnel matters.
McInnis said Funk's absence is unrelated to criticism school officials received from some parents in the aftermath of an arrest of a student with a handgun at the Diversified Minds Alternative Education Program in February. The program, which formerly operated out of a building next to the elementary school, has since been moved to another site.
McInnis said Funk has been on leave since "about March 9."
Funk is in her second year as principal at the school.
