WOODSTOCK -- The council unanimously approved Lt. Eric Reiley as the new Woodstock police chief at their Tuesday night meeting.
Reiley, 41, has been employed with Virginia State Police for the past 17 years. He is a Shenandoah County native who graduated from Strasburg High School in 1988.
He and his family, including his wife and two children, live in Woodstock.
Members of Reiley's family have lived in the area for the past 250 years.
According to Mayor Jeremy D. McCleary, Reiley was chosen from an original pool of 23 applicants for the position, which had been narrowed to a final four by the selection committee.
Reiley replaces Bryan Hutcheson, who left the position to begin as sheriff of Rockingham County in December 2011.
In the interim, Robert "Porky" Bowman filled in as chief.
