FRONT ROYAL -- County officials have confirmed that the public safety building, originally slated to be complete in December 2011, won't be ready for move in until the middle of June.

The building's move-in date was first pushed to April, and now Sheriff Daniel McEathron is looking at a date in the middle of June.

"I'm hopeful, but not real confident," he said. While the delay hasn't caused any operational issues in his office, employees are growing in their anticipation to get into the facility.

"It's a real frustration," McEathron said. "It's been delayed on [the contractor's] end. As far as I'm concerned, there's no excuse."

His office, along with the county's Fire and Rescue department will be housed in the building located on Skyline Vista Drive.

Deputy County Administrator Robert Childress said there have been issues that the general contractor, Nielsen Builders Inc. out of Harrisonburg, and sub-contractors have been working through.

"We've had some issue with materials and specific details that we laid out in the beginning," Childress said, and added that he's never worked with Nielsen before, but understand that they are "reputable."

"If one process falls behind, it's sort of like a domino effect," he said. "We don't want to settle when it comes to this facility."

The additional time spent on the project won't have any financial impact on the county, and instead, for every day the project goes without completion, Nielsen is facing $1,500 a day in liquidated damages, Childress said. Additionally, the county will incur some costs for furniture storage.

"At the end of the project, we'll be able to deliver a quality structure that will serve the citizens' needs for many years to come," he said. "We want this facility to be something the community can be proud of."

So what I here is Warren County will get $1500 a day for every day they are late? That's $180,000....heck why not let them take their time. It's money in the bank if You can collect which will never happen.
