Fire destroys Middletown home

MIDDLETOWN -- A fire drove two occupants from their house at 1111 Hites Road early Saturday morning before destroying the structure.

MIDDLETOWN -- A fire drove two occupants from their house at 1111 Hites Road early Saturday morning before destroying the structure.

Fire Marshal Jay Bauserman of the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department said the owners of the home, Patrick and Wanda Hibbs, escaped out the bedroom window of the one story home after a smoke detector awakened them.

"The smoke detector saved their lives," Bauserman said.

The Hibbs were uninjured, but a pet cat perished in the blaze, Bauserman said. He added that the Hibbs are now living with a daughter in Frederick County.

The fire also extended to a small outbuilding in the back of the house and caused some damage to vehicles parked in the front, he said.

"When the fire crews got there, the residence was fully involved," Bauserman said. "They did a good job of keeping it contained to the structure itself and the outbuilding. It didn't extend to the woods or anything else."

Bauserman said the cause of the fire is still under investigation but it was "not suspicious in nature."
