Police department requests stipend for field training officers

By Kim Walter -- kwalter@nvdaily.com

FRONT ROYAL -- Deputy Chief Mark Werner has requested that a one-time stipend be paid to four field training officers this year.

Werner came to town council's work session Monday night to take part in the discussion of the stipend. He explained that though this was not something that had been done before, it was necessary because of the amount of time and responsibility that officers put into the program.

"The field training officers make sure that the guys who graduate from the academy know how we want policing done here in Front Royal," he said. New recruits will graduate on May 22.

Werner asked that two officers receive $500 each for training new officers through the full 14 week program, while two other officers receive $250 each for training during 7 weeks of the program.

In total, Werner requested $2,000, but staff wasn't completely sure which budget year the funds would come from.

"We'll make sure that it's available one way or another," said Town Manager Steve Burke.

Councilmen agreed that it was a necessary cost, so Mayor Timothy Darr concluded that the item would be placed on the consent agenda for council's next meeting "given the funding method is clearly defined."

$2000? Well I'm glad big Timmy Darr could put his big boy pants on and make such a big decision!

It ain't enough, folks... The Front Royal Town Council continues to posture and pretend like they are addressing the problem, while they refuse to make the tough decisions necessary to retain quality staff. And the townsfolk will suffer as all the good people leave and the clowns come to work for the Town.

At least the clowns will be in good company with that windbag mayor.
