Daily Staff Report

State police provided more information about a Thursday afternoon crash in Shenandoah County which sent two people with minor injuries to a hospital.

A 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling northbound on Va. 628 (Middle Road) ran off the road to the right and struck a tree just south of Va. 606 near Strasburg at approximately 12:15 p.m., according to Virginia police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Rescue workers responded and took the driver, identified as Jonna F. Fuentes, 24, of Baker, W.Va., to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Geller stated. Responders also took a adult female and a 1-year-old boy, both passengers in the vehicle, to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Geller.

Twin 2-year-old girls did not have injuries in the crash. Both adults in the vehicle wore seat belts and the three children had been secured in child safety seats, according to Geller.

Alcohol did not play a role in the crash.

Trooper J. Rothwell charged Fuentes with reckless driving for failure to maintain control of the vehicle, according to Geller.

Not only is it the law but this illustrates the intelligence of using seatbelts and child restraints. I hate to think of the outcome had these folks been riding unrestrained.
