Edinburg man found dead under truck

Shenandoah County Sheriff's deputies don't know how long an Edinburg man found pinned under his truck near Columbia Furnace on Monday had been dead.

Authorities found Michael Allen Markley, 48, dead on a remote mountain trail. A Camp Strawderman employee found Markley pinned underneath a 1999 Dodge pickup truck and phoned police, Proctor said.

Deputies were dispatched to Camp Strawderman, 2494 Dellinger Acres Road, at about 11 a.m. Monday, Sheriff's Maj. Scott Proctor said Tuesday.

"It appears to be an accident," he said.

Markley, who was the long-time groundskeeper at the camp along Stoney Creek, according to his obituary, had last been seen April 24, Proctor said.

"We don't know for sure exactly when the actual accident occurred," he said. "We believe it was on or about the 24th or 25th. It appeared he had been pinned under the vehicle for an extended period of time."

The road is on a grade, according to Proctor. He said it appeared Markley had stopped to pick up something from the road, and was on the downhill side of the truck when it drifted or slid back, and pinned him by the leg.

The mountain trail is not well-traveled, Proctor said. The Sheriff's Office had not gotten any reports that Markley was missing, he said.

"It seems to be an unfortunate accident," Proctor said. "It's one of those tragic things that occur."

Markley's body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Northern Virginia for an autopsy, Proctor said, and the Sheriff's Office is awaiting those results.

According to Markley's obituary, his nickname was Beedy-Eye, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting and dancing, among other pursuits.

Reading this story has made me so sad, I can not even find any words to say other than to express my sorrow to Mr. Markley's family and friends. May he rest in peace.
