Scholarships
The Rotary Club of Woodstock will donate eight $1,000 scholarships to Lord Fairfax Community College, to be divided equally among the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters to Shenandoah County students with a 2.0 GPA or higher.
Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative has announced the 10 winners of its 21st annual scholarships. Each winner, from high schools in the SVEC service area, received $1,000.
Winners were Carter Black, of John Handley High School; Sydney Collins, of Broadway High School; Cassie Conley, of Stonewall Jackson High School; Janey Green, of James Wood High School; Stephanie Hertzenberg, of Spotswood High School; Hannah Huddle, of Central High School; David Leech, of Highland High School; and Amy Scheel, of East Rockingham High School.
To be considered for the SVEC scholarship, the student's parent or guardian needs to be a member/owner of the Cooperative.
SVEC serves more than 88,000 member/owner accounts in Augusta, Clarke, Frederick, Highland, Page, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren counties.
Earnings
United Bankshares Inc. has reported an increase in earnings for the first quarter of 2012 as compared to the first quarter of 2011. Earnings for the first quarter of 2012 were $21.0 million or 42 cents per diluted share while earnings for the first quarter of 2011 were $17.9 million or 41 cents per diluted share.
United's first quarter of 2012 results produced an annualized return on average assets of 1 percent and an annualized return on average equity of 8.63 percent.
Benefit
The Massanutten FFA Federation will hold the Randy Ward Memorial Golf Tournament on July 11 at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Course in Front Royal. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and golf begins at 9 a.m., followed by lunch at the end of the round.
The event remembers Ward, who taught agriculture for over 30 years at Massanutten Military Academy and middle school in Shenandoah and Louisa counties.
Proceeds will go to support FFA awards and activities for the FFA chapters in Shenandoah and Frederick counties, and the Virginia FFA Foundation.
