Scholarship

The Shenandoah County Education Association is accepting applications for a $500 scholarship through Friday.

The scholarship will be awarded to a college student who is majoring in the field of education.

Prospective candidates must be a Shenandoah County resident or graduate of the county's school system. Applications are available from the guidance department in each county high school. Completed applications should be sent to Stephanie Payne, Peter Muhlenberg Middle School, 1251 Susan Avenue, Woodstock, VA 22664.

Appointment

Winchester Environmental Consultants, Inc. has announced the promotion of Ryan Rose to Senior Project Manager. Rose is an industrial hygienist with asbestos and mold licensing whose responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of environmental site assessments, client relationships, research and design and project scheduling.

Six Essroc Ready Mix concrete plants in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Front Royal, Strasburg and Leesburg, have been awarded Green-Star certification by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. The program audits and certifies ready mixed concrete plants for environmental sustainability.

Each Green-Star recipient must satisfy a rigorous, structured certification process capable of withstanding third-party oversight.

The NRMCA Green-Star Program was developed to support the efforts of the ready mixed concrete industry toward environmental excellence through the recognition of the use of Environmental Management Systems as a tool for environmental benchmarking and continual improvement. The program was created in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Highways Partnership.

Front Royal dentist Dr. Craig Zunka attended the 35th anniversary meeting of the Holistic Dental Association where he welcomed the newly elected HDA president, Dr. Kevin Boehm. The HDA conference was held in San Francisco from April 19 to 21.

Zunka also taught a workshop called "13 Things You Need to Know About Calcium."


Habitat for Humanity of Winchester-Frederick County Board of Directors has announced Michael L. Butler, a seasoned executive and former charter member of the Board of Directors and president, will be its new executive director. Butler will provide overall executive leadership, manage operations, volunteers and staff.

Butler has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban Studies from Virginia Tech has served as vice-mayor of the Winchester City Common Council.

Recognition

The George Washington Hotel, a Wyndham Grand Hotel, has been recognized as The Hotel of the Year for 2011 by the Wyndham Hotels and Resorts brand. This is the highest honor in the upscale hotel brand's portfolio.

To be eligible for the award, a Wyndham Hotels and Resorts property must have demonstrated positive performance and outstanding characteristics in all areas of hospitality, offering excellence in customer service and quality as well as playing an active and positive role in the local community.

The hotel is owned by GW Leasing LLC, located in Winchester, and operated by Marshall Hotels & Resorts, a Maryland-based hotel management and services company.

Project

The Adult Care Center of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Inc. is teaming with volunteers from BB&T throughout May and June to help with activities programming and creating further awareness of the Adult Care Center. Part of the fourth annual BB&T Lighthouse Project, 20 associates from BB&T each will volunteer four hours to assist the center.

The teams each have selected a project to assist a non-profit for a couple months.

BB&T Associated has donated more than $150,000 hours in volunteer service as part of the Lighthouse Project since 2009.
