Queen 'Jazz' arrives in the Valley

WINCHESTER -- Queen Shenandoah LXXXV, Jazmyn 'Jazz' Dorsett, arrived in the city Wednesday night for the 85th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, and said her first impression was that Winchester is "absolutely gorgeous."

"You don't see a whole lot of mountains and hills in Texas, so it's a great change of pace," she said. "It's beautiful, I love it."

Dorsett, 20, flew into Dulles International Airport from Dallas with her father, hall-of-fame football player Tony Dorsett. Her mother, younger sister and two cousins will arrive Thursday, and the family will leave Winchester on Sunday.

Dorsett said she's looking forward to her crowning at the coronation on Friday the most, where her father will crown her.

"He's been calling me 'Big Apple' all week," she said, laughing. Her father came to the festival in 1985, and Dorsett said she's heard all about it from him.

"He's really excited about the midway and the food, but he's most excited about the Apple Pie Baking Contest...he loves apple pie," she said.

Following in her father's sporty footsteps, Dorsett plays basketball at a collegiate level as a shooting guard at Oklahoma State University. Though she's never been in a parade or pageant before, Dorsett is looking forward to getting dolled up for the festival, and said she's been practicing her "Miss America wave."

Of course, Dorsett has come prepared with a white gown and several pink and green outfits.

"I even made my dad pick out pink and green ties," she said.

Dorsett added that she's more excited than ever about being selected to fill the royal role this year.

"Y'all make me feel like a queen," she said.

Dorsett and her family will make appearances at events and the Grand Feature Parade this weekend.
