A Winchester woman is $250,000 richer after matching five numbers in the Mega Millions drawing May 15.

According to a news release from the Virginia Lottery, Tina Herring picked the numbers using birthdays and anniversaries.

Herring bought the winning ticket at Sheetz, 1503 N. Frederick Pike, according to the release.

"I play all the time, and I've played those same numbers for years," Herring said in a Tuesday evening phone interview.

She had considered giving up gambling before this win.

"My husband and I have both been laid-off twice," Herring, 50, said. "Money is really tight."

Now, the mother of two "absolutely" plans to keep trying her luck at the lottery. The most she'd ever won before was about $75 in a scratch-off game. Herring said had she had the matching Mega Number she'd have won the $25 million jackpot.

Herring urged others to keep their lottery dreams alive.

"I know I've played those numbers I bet 15 years," she said. "You just never know when it might be you. It's got to be somebody, it might as well be you."

And, even though Herring is now working two full-time jobs -- one at an insurance agency and one at a bowling alley -- she has no plans of resigning.

"Apple Blossom Friday was the first day I had had off since Christmas," she said. "But, I wouldn't do it any other way. I just like to work."

The odds of winning the quarter-million-dollar prize are 1 in nearly 4 million, according to the release.
