The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles now has motorized offices.

One of five DMV 2 Go mobile customer service centers was parked in front of the Strasburg Town Hall for most of Monday.

"Anything that you can do inside a brick-and-mortar DMV, you can do on the mobile unit," DMV spokeswoman Sunni Brown said Monday afternoon.

That includes driver's license road tests, license renewals, ID card applications and renewals, vision screenings, address and voter registration updates, and getting vehicle titles, plates and decals.

The DMV has fixed offices in Woodstock, Front Royal, Winchester and Harrisonburg.

Strasburg resident Teresa Cutlip renewed her tags Tuesday at the mobile unit, which is handicapped-accessible.

"I thought it was great," she said in a phone interview. "It would be very handy if they came more often. I think it's great, very convenient, no lines. I hope they do it more often -- save me a trip to Woodstock."

The mobile units are about customer convenience, Brown said.

"Our goal here at DMV is that nobody has to drive more than 30 miles or 30 minutes to get to a DMV," she said.

The DMV got a mobile unit a little more than a year ago, and that mainly stayed in the central part of the state, Brown said. Now, there are five units.

Monday was the first time DMV 2 Go came to Strasburg, but will return Aug. 7, Brown said, and then, depending on turnout, could make regular stops in town. She said visits are done on monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly bases depending on transaction counts.
According to the DMV website, the mobile unit will be in Luray on July 10 at 10 Fairlane Drive.

DMV 2 Go also is scheduled to visit Shenandoah University Sept. 5 and 6, according to Brown.

According to the department's website, those looking to schedule a visit by DMV 2 Go, can email DMV2GORichmond@dmv.virginia.gov.

Space for a 32-foot vehicle and customer parking must be available, according to the site, which says the unit can stop at businesses, college campuses, assisted living and retirement centers, military bases and government buildings.

The department's website has a schedule of planned visits at www.dmvNOW.com/DMV2GoCalendar.

Am I the only one who thinks this is an absurd use of taxpayer funds?

DMV was/ is contempating charging $1.00 per month for E-Z passes. So beside toll increases on the various Virginia roads, we will pay an extra $12.00 per year plus toll for the conveniece of using the toll roads? Believe those E-Z passes will remain at only a dollar a month communters?

McDonnell's administration created the new proof of veteran status ID card which allows veterans discounts at stores, state parks and other businesses. The DMV 2 Go mobile customer service center is used in applications for these new cards. Would it not have been more cost efficient to Virginia taxpayers for the State to work with the Veterans Administration to see if these Veterans ALREADY have a card that Virginia could acknowledge/accept for these deserved benefits. But wait, an election is coming up isn't it?

Do we really need to make it easier for people in assisted living and retirement centers to get on the road?
