A former Winchester Medical Center nurse has been reprimanded by the Virginia Board of Nursing after showing up to work drunk.
Registered nurse Denise A. Bain, of Cross Junction, appeared before a board of nursing committee April 3 in Henrico County, according to a board order issued April 17.
The order states Bain showed up to work at the hospital Aug. 1 with "an unsteady gait, slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and an odor of alcohol on her breath."
A fitness of duty blood test was given, and revealed a blood alcohol level of nearly 0.24 percent -- three times the legal limit for driving.
According to the order, Bain told the committee she had consumed several shots of alcohol at 3 a.m. before the incident to deal with the pain of a ganglion cyst on her foot.
"She stated that she knew she should not have reported for work, but she did not want to leave the unit short-handed," the order states. "She acknowledged that she committed a grave mistake and expressed remorse for her actions."
It states Winchester Medical Center fired Bain, who had worked at the hospital for about eight years, and that she is now working at a hospital in Warrenton.
