Sheriff's deputies from Shenandoah County arrested a 40-year-old man for felony possession of child pornography last week during an investigation into accusations that he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a 12-year-old girl.
Lt. Tom Shelton of the sheriff's office said the defendant, Bryan Dale Coffey of 12658 Old Valley Pike, Edinburg, came to the attention of law enforcement through a complaint from the girl's parents who live in the Toms Brook area.
Shelton said the sheriff's office responded to the complaint by investigating whether Coffey could be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The day before Coffey's arrest on June 7, Shelton applied for a search warrant, according to records in the Shenandoah County General District Court.
The warrant application's list of evidence being sought included a cell phone and other electronically generated items -- photographs, texts, email messages, cell phone call logs and "storage media of cell phone."
The warrant application states that Shelton and Deputy R.M. Mauck interviewed girls identified as M.M. and K.S. The warrant application states that both witnesses said they had "personal knowledge" of a 12-year-old female victim sending and receiving nude photos of herself and Bryan Coffey by cell phone.
The warrant application also states that "the juvenile witnesses were interviewed separately, and the statements corroborate the fact that the nude photos were sent within the past few months."
Shelton said in an interview that the electronic devices found during the search "revealed what we suspect is child pornography. That is our allegation."
Shelton said the investigation is continuing and "more charges are possible in the future."
Coffey is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. on June 21 in Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
