Escapee's flight ends with fall through ceiling
Front Royal police said they and officers from the state Department of Corrections captured a 19-year old man Friday after he had escaped from the White Post Diversion Center at about 7 p.m. Thursday.
Officers from Front Royal and White Post converged on a house on East Criser Road after receiving information that the escapee, Matthew T. Berkowitz, was there, according to a news release from Front Royal police.
Police contacted the occupants inside the house, which they believed to be the residence of a relative of Berkowitz, according to the press release. After the occupants were cleared from the house, police concluded that Berkowitz was barricaded in the attic, according to the news release.
Members of the Front Royal Police Department Tactical Response unit and K-9 unit arrived at the house and prepared to enter the house, police said. Police said Berkowitz fell through the ceiling moments before their entry.
He was transported to the Warren County Jail on a probation violation warrant issued after his escape, and his return to the Department of Corrections is pending, police said.
