Hospital makes donation through community baby shower
By Kim Walter -- email@example.com
After a month of collecting items through the "community baby shower,", Shenandoah Memorial Hospital on Monday presented three organizations with donations.
Representatives from A Small Hand, Healthy Families of Shenandoah County and the Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center were selected to receive contributions. Five boxes were set up around the hospital to collect new baby items from Mother's Day to Father's Day.
Hospital employees donated enough materials to fill 12 large bags that were evenly dispersed among the three organizations.
Items donated include diapers, wipes, bottles, thermometers, clothing and baby Tylenol. The pregnancy center also received some prenatal vitamins that the hospital provided.
Ann McBroom of A Small Hand in Edinburg extended a "huge thank you" to the hospital.
"Every little bit helps," she said of the donations. The organization serves families with infants in the form of a week's supply of materials, but only as donations permit.
A Small Hand is also one of only three diaper banks in Virginia.
The organization operates out of Edinburg Christian Church and helps around 5,000 people a year, McBroom said.
Healthy Families has a partnership with the hospital and serves around 60 families a year. Information and guidance regarding child development, nutrition and safety is provided through home visits. Services are individualized and often continue until a child enters preschool.
The Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center, located in Edinburg, reaches out to about 500 individuals a year, said Jean Martin with the center. Services include pregnancy tests, information on available choices when dealing with a pregnancy, medical referrals, clothing and counseling.
"We normally would have to purchase things like this," Martin said of the donations. More than 700 client visits were made to the center in 2011 for material goods and services.
