A 16-year-old Mt. Jackson boy was shot in the leg outside his home Wednesday night.
Shenandoah County Sheriff's Maj. Scott Proctor said the shooting was reported at about 9 p.m. at 1809 Dodson Road. He said they found the boy with an apparent small-caliber gunshot wound to his upper left leg.
The victim was treated at the scene, and then airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Proctor said.
"The 16-year-old reported he heard a shot, and then subsequently found the wound on his leg," he said. "It's not sure what direction the shot came from...As far as we know, there's no witnesses."
Proctor said an investigator had spoken to the young man's family, who reported he was out of surgery Thursday, and the injury didn't appear to be life-threatening.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 459-6100.
