Sherando, Stonewall Jackson seniors graduate Friday

By Kim Walter -- kwalter@nvdaily.com

Two commencement exercises will be held Friday night for the graduating classes of 2012 from Sherando High School and Stonewall Jackson High School.

Sherando's ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. in Arrowhead Stadium. The school will say goodbye and good luck to 340 graduates, giving it the largest senior class in Frederick County's public school system.

Of the 340 graduating, almost 200 will head to higher education, with the majority of them planning to attend Lord Fairfax Community College.

Resource teacher Neil Walker and math teacher Stephanie Berry will speak during commencement. Walker was named Teacher of the Year by fellow educators at Sherando, and Berry was given the same title by the school's National Honor Society.

The two valedictorians, Deepak De and Abhinar Sharma, will both head to UVA in the fall to continue their education.

The graduation exercise also will include the traditional senior tribute, the Legend of the Cap and Gown and "The Warrior's Farewell."

Stonewall Jackson High School's graduation is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the General Stadium.

This is the first year in Shenandoah County's history that commencement exercises for each of the three high schools will be staggered between two days and different times.

The high school will graduate 145 seniors. Over $970,000 has been awarded in scholarships to 42 different recipients to further their learning, and over 30 students worked to achieve a 3.75 or higher GPA.

Travis Buhl, the valedictorian, and John-Michael Pirtle, the salutatorian, will leave their hometown of New Market and head to UVA in the fall. Buhl plans to study business, while Pirtle will study sports psychology.

Sherando's rain date is at 7 p.m. Saturday, and Stonewall Jackson will hold graduation at the same time, but in their new gym.
