Strasburg teen injured in crash comes out of coma

By Joe Beck -- jbeck@nvdaily.com

A girl who suffered serious injuries in a single-car crash on Mount Hebron Road in May has regained consciousness, her aunt said Thursday.

Jymi Rudolph continues to progress faster than medical professionals at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville expected, Beth Rudolph said. But the extent of her future recovery remains uncertain.

"Even though she is progressing, blowing us away with her healing, it's still baby steps at this point," Beth Rudolph said.

Jymi Rudolph came out of her medically-induced coma Sunday night as doctors began to dial back painkillers and other medication she has been receiving, Beth Rudolph said, adding that her niece is "out of stroke range."

Jymi, a sophomore at Strasburg High School, is still feeling the effects of medication, even as she begins working on academic lessons with a teacher from the hospital staff, Beth Rudolph said.

"She is conscious, but she is still not herself in the sense that she is angry and detoxing" from medication," Beth Rudolph said of her niece.

Jymi Rudolph has been in the hospital since May 19 when the car she was riding in with four other teenagers went off Mount Hebron Road around 10:50 p.m. She was the only one in the car to be seriously injured. Her injuries were listed as a broken third lumbar vertebra, broken jaw, several skull fractures, swelling of the brain and a bruised torso.

The driver of the car, Colby Cooper, 18, was ticketed for reckless driving in the crash.
Beth Rudolph said he has "spent quite a bit good of time" visiting her niece in the hospital since the accident.

Beth Rudolph said her niece "seems to have a lot of her mental function back in that she's comprehending, she knows people, she's retained information" from before the accident.

Doctors won't be able to gauge the extent of Jymi Rudolph's recovery until certain intervals of time marked in weeks and months pass, Beth Rudolph said.

In the meantime, an outpouring of community support continues to hearten Jymi Rudolph and her family, Beth Rudolph said. The American Legion Post 77 is sponsoring a carnival-themed fundraiser for Jymi from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the post's river lot on Funk Road, one of several such events held since the accident.

"I just want people to know how thankful we are for the positive thoughts and people's understanding and how they've come together for Jymi," Beth Rudolph said. "It's just amazing and unbelievable. We are so thankful everyday for what the community is doing."
