Two Shenandoah County high schools hold Saturday commencement exercises

By Kim Walter -- kwalter@nvdaily.com

Central High School and Strasburg High School will graduate their seniors on Saturday and bring an end to the 2011-2012 school year in Shenandoah County.

Central's ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m. at the school's sports complex, will result in 205 diplomas being awarded. The high school has the largest senior class out of the three county schools this year.

Valedictorian Seruz Tehrani and salutatorian Laura Raciborski, both from Woodstock, will address their fellow students, as will the school's principal, Christopher Cook.

Tehrani will attend UVA in the fall, while Raciborski will head to Clemson University.

The class of 2012 at Central chose orange and camouflage as their class colors, "The world isn't ending, we're just taking over!" as the class motto, and "It's the End of the World as We Know It" by R.E.M. as their song.

More than 50 seniors will be recognized for their academic excellence in achieving a 3.75 or higher GPA.

Strasburg High School will present diplomas to 173 seniors during their commencement in Ram Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

With more than 130 students getting scholarships toward higher education, the grand total of funds for the class comes to $927,449, which is more than $500,000 higher than last year's total. More than 20 students earned the distinction of a 3.75 or higher GPA.

Elizabeth Keller, the valedictorian, plans to go to UVA in the fall, and salutatorian Alyssa Stickley will attend Bridgewater College.

Both will address their fellow graduates, as will class president Tess Pangle and the school's principal, Kenneth Knesh.

Glad to see the NVD cover the graduations this year. Unfortunately, the Strasburg Class of 2010 got snubbed by the NVD. Sadly, that special day can never be recaptured in print.
