Warren County businesses receive local grants

By Sally Voth -- svoth@nvdaily.com

Three Warren County businesses are receiving financial assistance aimed at improving their operations.

A total of $2,200 in grants is being presented today at the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce offices, said Jennifer McDonald, executive director of the Front Royal-Warren County Economic Development Authority.

This marks the two organizations' second year of presenting the Business Excellence: Business Appreciation Awards, she said in a Thursday afternoon phone interview.

"We used to do a big business luncheon, and we decided in these tough economic times it may be better to give businesses a grant rather than a lunch," McDonald said.

George McIntyre, owner of The Apple House Restaurant and Gift Shop, said he plans to use his $700 grant to update restrooms at his business.

"I'm tickled to death," he said Thursday about the award. "We're honored to receive it. We appreciate it. We plan to use it wisely.

"We're in full support of anything we can do in the Front Royal-Warren County community to enhance the lifestyle and other businesses and things of that nature that are here. It's our home and we're proud of it, and we want other people to realize how great it is."

Teresa Henry received $500 for her web and graphics design business, Linking You Designs, according to a news release from the EDA. It states she will use it to upgrade software at the home-based business.

The largest grant went to Andrew Shearer, of WFTR/WZRV AMFM Radio, according to the release. It states he will use the $1,000 gift to improve remote broadcasts.

The grants coincide with Business Appreciation Week.

According to the release, 13 businesses applied for the grants. Applicants had to be a small business, be licensed in the town or county, and have 500 or fewer employees, it states.

McDonald said each applicant's length of time in the community, community involvement and the need for the grant were among the criteria considered in selecting the winners.

"I know that $2,200 isn't a lot of money, she said. "We're hoping that the grants that we give will help these businesses with what they're trying to achieve."

I think I could make $2,200 picking up pop bottles and beer cans alongside the highway. The outhouse could use a new seat and my Windows 98 needs updating. With my busy schedule, who has time to listen to the radio after composing and posting a senseless message like this one? Busy, busy, busy, no time to say hello, good-bye, I'm late, I'm late, I'M LATE.
